Going to College

GOING TO COLLEGE

There isn't a player participating in junior golf that doesn't have the desire to play college golf one day.  Playing any sport at the collegiate level takes more than talent.  It takes time, commitment and making the right choice as to where to play.  We have prepared this section to give you a better understanding of how college golf and college itself works.

USJGT Co-Directors Cliff Frisby and Mark McClellan have more than 60 years combined experience in college athletics, university administration and the golf business.  They understand there is more to it than just sending a college coach results from tournaments.  It takes an understanding of what colleges and college coaches are looking for in players.  It takes knowing where to find the money to pay for college.  And it takes the background and knowledge to assist you, as players, in making the right choice.

Check out the background of our two directors and you will see the wealth of experience available to you.

CLIFF FRISBY

Cliff is a long-time fixture in the Tennessee golf community as a player, a club pro and tournament administrator.

As a player, Cliff competed collegiately at The University of Memphis.  He qualified and played in two FedEx/St. Jude Classics on the PGA Tour and served as the Head Golf Professional at Galloway in Memphis for more than 20 years.

In addition, Cliff served as the Assistant Coach at The University of Memphis for 10 years under the late Jim Cook and coached the high school team at The Hutchison School in Memphis as well.

A renowned putter, Cliff is considered one of the finest teachers of the short game in the state of Tennessee.

He is well known throughout the Southeast in the golf community and is well connected with numerous college coaches around the country.

MARK MCCLELLAN

Mark brings a strong mixture of college athletics and university administration to the USJGT.  He has served as Assistant Sports Information Director at Auburn University, Sports Information Director at Georgia Southern University and Sports Information Director for Basketball at The University of Memphis.  He is an award winning sportscaster having served as the play-by-play announcer for Memphis baseball and women's basketball for seven years and has authored one book on college football.

In addition to his athletics administration background, Mark now serves as a financial aid counselor at Christian Brothers University in Memphis and is considered one of the leading experts in the state of Tennessee on college scholarships and financial aid.

His combination of athletic adminstration and scholarship expertise provides USJGT players and parents with an excellent resource on what to expect in college and how to pay for it.
